A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
Actually about 17 years ago I got an N64, and one of the first games I got for it was Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. A dear friend of mine introduced me to the game, and we used to stay up late on sleepovers having competitions to see who could do the best on given missions.
I wouldn't exactly call this game groundbreaking or industry-changing, but it was certainly a lot of fun. It was worthy of at least two sequels, which came out for the Nintendo GameCube a few years later.
I don't own an N64 anymore, but I still wanted to revisit this classic. Only this game, the first Rogue Squadron, was made on PC. The versions that made it to GameCube were console-exclusive, so I never got to play them.
I was able to play through this game and see that I still retained my flying skills after almost 20 years. I strongly recommend playing this with a gamepad rather than a joystick. I used an XBOX 360 controller with a USB cable.
I also recommend using nGlide, which allows you to enable the 3DFX options for older games that support it. At the time it was around, it was superior to DirectX, but the latter won in the long run. Games that support 3DFX have enhanced visuals compared to the DirectX modes they support.
You can find and download nGlide here: http://www.zeus-software.com/download....
There is also a notorious camera glitch that occurs when this game is run on a multi-core processor. I was able to mitigate it with Process Lasso (but not completely).
This is the second bonus mission which can be acquired by finishing all the main missions with a minimum of a silver rating. The key to getting a gold rating on this mission is to finish the trench run within only a couple of minutes. Closing the S-foils between targets cuts down time significantly. I'd also recommend avoiding the fighters and focusing fire on the turbolasers to get the required number of enemy kills.
