In Honduras, working in the gold mines is part of the country’s history. However, Honduras is considered a CAHRA country (Conflict and High-Risk Areas), because the gold mining sector deals with a variety of conflicts and human rights violations. Recently, new European legislation has required gold importers to exercise due diligence - to identify, minimize and communicate about such risks of conflict and human rights violations - and therefore it is important that Honduras’ gold sector gets support to develop better social and economic conditions for (small and artisanal) mine workers and local mining communities. Therefore, the Honduran small & artisanal mining sector became part of EPRM.

In Honduras, EPRM focuses firstly on formalizing illegal gold mines and its miners and secondly in providing access to official production chains and the international gold market. To achieve these goals, miners and gold brokers received training and workshops, in which they got trained on management skills, administrative skills to report mining processes, environmental aspects, participation in local decision making and knowledge of their rights

Ultimately, all these steps lead to a transparent and formal production chain where formal traders and European end-customers can trace every step of the gold.
