They took emergency steps and then those laws were confirmed by their legislative function and their assistance has not only been comprehensive, but it has been prompt enough to be of assistance to us. I wanted to say how much I appreciate that."

For the response that we have provided our friend, our brother country in a time of need. And, I have come here to reciprocate the visit of Secretary Ashcroft when he came to Italy, but also to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks and to visit some detention and rehabilitation centers in the penitentiary system here because we would like to learn from experience and in view of changes in our system in Italy. And, again we would like to thank you and thank the Secretary for the hospitality you have shown to us."

STORYLINE:

Italian Justice Minister Roberto Castelli held talks with his U-S counterpart in Washington DC on Tuesday.

During the meeting at the Justice Department, U-S Attorney General John Ashcroft praised the Italian government for its support in the war on terrorism.

Castelli came to Washington to pay a reciprocal visit and to tour American prisons after Ashcroft visited Italy last May for an introduction to the Italian justice system.

The Italian minister is also scheduled to visit New York later this week and to talk with other members of the American judiciary.
