Benevento | Pearls of Italy

Benevento is a city of Campania in Southern Italy, 50 kilometers northeast of Naples.

It occupies the site of the ancient Beneventum, originally Maleventum. The meaning of the name of the town is evidenced by its former Latin name, translating as good or fair wind. Its origins are so ancient that they blend into the legend: in the imperial period, it was supposed to have been founded by Diomedes after the Trojan War.
Due to its artistic and cultural significance, the Santa Sofia Church in Benevento has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as part of a group of seven historic buildings inscribed as Longobards in Italy, Places of Power.

During its long history, Benevento has been part of several kingdoms: after being the chief city of Samnium, it became a Roman city. After the demise of the Roman empire, it became the seat of a powerful Lombard duchy before passing to the Papal State until the Italian unification.

It is this mix of history and different stratifications of reigns and kingdoms that makes Benevento unique, a true Italian hidden gem worth exploring.
