Описание к видео The LEGO Spectrometer | Public Lab

Get yours at http://bit.ly/legospec

This is the Lego Spectrometer from Public Lab. It's a tool that helps to analyze the chemical composition of a sample — by passing light through a sample and scattering it so that it is captured by a camera as bands of color, and then transforming those bands into a graph that gives more precise data about highs and lows, it is possible to start identifying chemicals that may be present in a sample.

Public Lab users will generally share their spectra on http://SpectralWorkbench.org, an online tool that will convert your images (they’ll look like rainbows) into graphs — the highs and lows on various points of the graph can help you to identify chemical components in a sample, and by comparing the spectra of an unknown sample to the spectra of something that has already been identified it is possible to draw conclusions about what may (or may not) be present.

The spectrometer and Spectral Workbench are some of Public Lab’s earliest tools-- by breaking an otherwise expensive tool into more accessible/DIY parts (legos or cardboard, webcams or Raspberry Pi cameras, recycled DVD’s) it means that spectroscopy is a research method that anyone can explore.

The Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science (Public Lab) is a community, supported by a 501(c)3 non-profit, that develops and applies open-source tools to environmental exploration and investigation. By democratizing inexpensive and accessible do-it-yourself techniques, Public Lab creates a collaborative network of practitioners who actively re-imagine the human relationship with the environment.

The core Public Lab program is focused on community science, in which we research open-source hardware and software tools and methods to generate knowledge and share data about community environmental health. Our goal is to increase the ability of underserved communities to identify, redress, remediate, and create awareness and accountability around environmental concerns. Public Lab achieves this by providing online and offline training, education and support, and by focusing on locally-relevant outcomes that emphasize human capacity and understanding.
