a. Features / Description
In this model, a nurse is responsible for all aspects of care for one or more patients during a specific shift.
It is a holistic approach, where the nurse handles everything from administering medications to personal care.
2. Primary Nursing
Primary nursing assigns one nurse as the primary caregiver for a group of patients for 24 hours responsibility .
3. Functional Nursing
In functional nursing, tasks are divided among the team based on roles.
Each nurse or healthcare provider performs a specific task / function for all patients.
4. Task-Based Assignment
This method assigns nurses based on the tasks that need to be completed, regardless of which patient the task is for.
5. Team Nursing
A team leader (usually a registered nurse) assigns tasks to a group of nursing staff (RN, LPN/LVN, and Nsg. aides).
6. Modular Nursing
Modular nursing is a modification of team nursing where the patient care area is divided into modules based on geographic location of the patients.
Each module has a small team of caregivers who are responsible for all patients within that area.
7. Acuity-Based Assignment
This method considers the complexity and intensity of patient needs (acuity) when assigning care.
Patients with more complex care needs are assigned to nurses with the appropriate skills and time availability.
8. Workload-Based Assignment
Patients are assigned to healthcare providers based on their acuity levels, with more complex or high-need patients being assigned to more experienced or skilled providers.
9. Case Management
A case manager (often a RN with M.Sc. Nsg.) is assigned to coordinate care for a patient with complex healthcare needs.
