This song was originally written for the 1970 movie M*A*S*H, which was a satire of the US involvement in the Korean War. The lyrics were written by the 15 year old son of the film’s Director, Robert Altman, who gave him the task to write the "stupidest song ever" to mirror the absurdity and tragedy of war. The song went on to become a number one hit and was used as the theme song to the M*A*S*H spin-off TV show, one of the highest rating US TV shows ever, on air from 1972 – 1983.
