Have you come across constructivist grounded theory and thought, “What on earth is that?!” You’re definitely not alone! It’s one of those research methods that can feel super confusing, especially with all the jargon flying around. But don’t worry, in today’s video, I’m going to break it all down in a way that actually makes sense. No confusing academic language, just a straightforward explanation that’ll help you get your head around key concepts like coding, constant comparison, theoretical sampling, memo writing and others!
I’m Dr Elizabeth Yardley, and I’ve spent the last 20 years helping PhD students get unstuck and move forward with their research. I know how overwhelming it can be to navigate different methods and approaches, especially when they feel like a complete minefield. That’s why we’re going to dive into constructivist grounded theory and unravel what makes it so different from other methods. Why does it flip traditional research on its head? And how does it let you, the researcher, take an active role in building theory from the ground up?
If you’ve ever wondered how to piece together a theory without starting with one already in mind, or how your own perspective shapes the research you’re doing, this video is for you. We’ll explore how you gather your data, start connecting the dots, and actually co-create the theory with your participants. Yes, co-create – you’re not just discovering something that’s already there!
If you’re curious about constructivist grounded theory, hit play and let’s dive in. And while you’re here, drop a comment to let me know if you’re using this approach in your own research – I’d love to hear what you’re working on!
