Paquette and Dumont examined rough and tumble play as moments where children are learning how to manage themselves during challenging, exciting situations. The focus is not on whether rough play is good or bad, but on how adults step in during the play.

When adults pay attention, set boundaries, and help kids reset, play becomes a chance to practice control. Children learn how to stop, calm their bodies, and return to play without losing control.

This study isn’t about building grit, toughness, or endurance. That might be what many of us want rough play to do, but this research is focused on emotional regulation and learning.

It’s about regulation in the moment. Stopping. Pausing. Staying within limits during an exciting experience.

Unmanaged excitement does not teach control. Guided play does.
