In this video How to make a tapered leg on the benchtop jointer I show you how to make a tapered leg on The budget jointer these jointers typically cost in the 300 to $400 range and are great for hobbyists and small projects but they lack certain aspects that the higher budget jointers have. What I found in research online is that the budget jointer only has a maximum depth of 1/8 in the higher end jointers go upwards of a three quarter inch and have a rabbiting ledge which allows you to cut rabbits on boards. I take a 2-in square and Mark a line in the middle on all four sides and I show you how to cut your first four cuts to create your tapered leg for a table leg. After making the first four cuts you should see that the radio stops at the line that you marked. Once you've achieved the four cuts, you flip your board. 180° and then do the same thing going the full length of the board. This should give you your taper for the length of the leg. This example was done with with a soft wood, I used pine for this example, but I also use oak as well. Not in the video. The budget jointer unless the blades are very sharp or if you have a spiral cutting head with a carbide inserts has to work hard to make most cuts I noticed once the blades start getting dull and it doesn't take much of them to get dull if you're using hardwoods so this could be very costly in the long run with straight knife cutters with the spiral insert cutters you can rotate the inserts at least four times before you'd have to replace them.
