In 1964, nine African-American high school students challenged the segregated school system of Sand Springs, Oklahoma. The attempted to transfer to an all-white high school, defying the local school board. They prevailed and hastened the desegregation of the rest of the school system. Fifty-eight years later, Black and white students from the period came together to sponsor a plaque in the high school lobby commemorating the courage of the nine students and their families.
