Dosage Calculations Based on Body Surface Area

Описание к видео Dosage Calculations Based on Body Surface Area

Dosage Calculations Based on Body Surface Area video illustrates how to solve drug dosage calculations questions where the drug dose is normalized to the patients body surface area. This tutorial gives a brief overview of why the patients body surface area is important when it comes to dosing therapeutic agents for cancer patients and pediatric patients, how to calculate body surface area using the Mosteller equation and nomograms and demonstrates how to solve dosage calculations based on body surface area questions using four strategically selected examples.

Here are a few highlights:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The body surface area (BSA) method of calculating drug doses is widely used for two types of patient groups:
- Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy
- Pediatric patients
- BSA is expressed as square meters (m2). It can be determined using:
- Equations (e.g., Mosteller Method, Du Bois Method)
- Nomograms
- An average-sized adult has a BSA of 1.73 m2
- In some cases, the usual dose is expressed as a specific quantity of drug per unit of patient body surface area (e.g., mg/m2).
Mosteller Equations:
*********************
- 𝑩𝑺𝑨 (𝒎^𝟐)=√((𝑷𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕^′ 𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 (𝒄𝒎)𝒙 𝑷𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕^′ 𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 (𝒌𝒈))/𝟑𝟔𝟎𝟎)
- 𝑩𝑺𝑨 (𝒎^𝟐)=√((𝑷𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕^′ 𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 (𝒊𝒏.)𝒙 𝑷𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕^′ 𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 (𝒍𝒃))/𝟑𝟏𝟑𝟏)
Nomograms:
*********************
- A nomogram has three columns:
- Height (expressed in centimeters and in inches)
- Body surface area (expressed in square meters)
- Weight (expressed in kilograms and in pounds)
- To use a nomogram, the height and weight of a patient are found on the nomogram and then a straight line is drawn connecting the two values.
- The BSA for that patient is found where the line intersects the BSA column.
