WWE WrestleMania 23: John Cena vs Shawn Michaels (SmackDown vs RAW 2008)

Following the 2007 Royal Rumble event, WWE Champion John Cena awaited a new challenger for the WWE Championship. Cena had successfully defended the gold against Umaga at back to back pay-per-views, and was now ready to move onto a new opponent.

Eager to combat John Cena, Shawn Michaels answered the call. The Heartbreak Kid had been the final man eliminated from the Royal Rumble, having succumbed to the wrath of The Undertaker. Still, Michaels put on an incredible Royal Rumble performance, and so fans everywhere were excited about a potential match with John Cena. That contest would end up occurring at WrestleMania 23, but the journey these two superstars went on before the event had plenty of twists and turns.

On the January 29, 2007 episode of Monday Night RAW, John Cena & Shawn Michaels teamed up to challenge Edge & Randy Orton (Rated RKO) for the World Tag Team Titles. Suprisingly, the duo of Cena and Michaels were victorious, but it was clear that HBK wanted the WWE Championship as well. A few weeks later, Cena and Michaels defeated Batista & The Undertaker at No Way Out, and then the four had a rematch the next night on RAW. On that night, Michaels chose to superkick John Cena during the contest, heating their rivalry up big time for their epic encounter at WrestleMania 23.
