San Diego Zoo Discovery Outpost Reptile Walk

Last time we toured the Discovery Outpost Reptile house, today we continue our journey outside on the Reptile Walk.

First we come across two yards. The right side we find a habitat housing European Pond Turtles, Marginated Tortoises, Scheltopusik and the Jeweled Lacerta. The yard to the left is home to bot the Western Great Plated lizard and the Yellow-Throated Plated Lizard, as well as the Radiated Tortoise.

From there the walk way takes us past signing telling us about Seasonal Wetlands or life in a temporary pool as well as describes some of the native plants in California like the Baja Fairy Duster and the Basket Rush.

Next up is a building divided into two different sections. The left wall is home to amphibians and here we will find Splash Back Poison Frog, Green-and-Black Poison Frog, Splendid Tree Frog, Asian Giant Toad, Bornean Eared Frog, Milky Tree Frog, Dyeing Poison Frog, Black-Legged Poison Frog, Kaiser Newt, Bronze-backed Mantella, Golden Mantella and the Panamanian Golden Frog.

The displays on the right side of the building house reptiles and amphibians native to California, here we will find the Colorado River Toad, Coastal Rosy Boa, California Kingsnake, San Diego Gopher Snake, San Diego Mountain Kingsnake, Giant Horned Lizard and the Baja California Rat Snake.

Past this we get a overhead look of the Chinese Alligator and wind our way down from there to a front view. In the wild a few small populations of this alligator survive in agricultural wetlands, most can be found living in breeding centers.

The Turtle Building houses Roti Island Snake-Necked Turtle, Broad-Shelled Snake-Necked Turtle, Chinese Three-striped Box Turtle, Malayan Snail-eating Turtle, Fly River Turtle, Parker's Snake-Necked Turtle, South American Snake-Necked Turtle, Red-headed River Turtle and the Mata Mata.

With Multiple viewing areas of this pond habitat we get great views of the Gharial which shares it home with River Terrapin, Asian Leaf Turtle, Broad-Shelled Snake-Necked Turtle, Red-Bellied Short-Necked Turtle, Hamilton's Pond Turtle, Chinese Stripe-Necked Turtle, Fly River Turtle, Painted Terrapin, Narrow-Headed Softshell Turtle, Malaysian Giant Turtle, Yellow Pond Turtle, Parker's Snake-Necked Turtle, Indo-Gangetic Flapshell Turtle.

As we make our final loop of the Reptile walk we will pass by Brown Tortoise, African Spurred Tortoise, Grand Cayman Iguana, Galapagos Tortoises, Many of these Galapagos Tortoises have been at the San Diego Zoo since 1928.

and finally we come across Black-Throated Monitor and the Southern Leopard Tortoise.

Thank you for joining me on this trek through the Discovery Outpost Reptile Walk at the San Diego Zoo! We will come back and visit another area of the Zoo in the very near future.
