My mom's been married to her husband, Ted, for seven years. My dad? He’s been out of my life for just as long. Before that, he wasn’t around much. He’s mentally ill, it runs on his side of the family, and it hit him hard. But I still love him, and I have a few good memories.
Ted, though? He provides, calls me his daughter, even offered to adopt me. But I refused. Why? He constantly puts down my dad. Did you think that’s all? Well, it gets worse. He even discourages me from looking at family photos and reminds me that “Ted is the one who stayed.” And Ted's family? They repeat it, saying things like “Ted isn’t a ‘waste of life.’”
Last year, I was diagnosed with OCD. I always sensed I was different, with strict routines. It got bad enough I had to stay inpatient. And after, Ted’s family said my “illness came from rejecting Ted.” You thought it ended here? No. Yesterday, they planned a big family dinner, and everyone insisted I go. I chose not to, saying my planner was packed. My mom and Ted got angry, saying I’d skip plans only for “my real family.” They said I was being unfair to Ted’s family.
