Targeted therapy or we call it as a biological therapy acts on the targets specifically on the cancers. So for example if we take out for the biopsy we out chunk of the tissue to see whether what type of cancer it is associated with. At the same time we look for some of the targets on the cancer itself. For example if we take the example of breast cancer we test for HER 2 NEU as the target. Suppose HER2NEU is positive, we have a special drug called as Anti- HER2 NEU or Anti HER2 NEU therapy where we combine with chemotherapy and definitely it has a very good response rates. Similarly the target therapies are available for various cancers like lung cancer it is there for lymphoma, leukemia it is there. So we have to identify which type of tumor markers are there, targets are there then we can identify and treat the patients. This is targeted therapy. It can be given along with chemotherapy or with radiation therapy.
