A Deadly Intent:
A proposed US sanctions bill threatening 500 percent tariffs on countries buying discounted Russian oil has shaken markets. Though it could target China, India, and Brazil, past experience suggests India may face the sharpest impact. Even as intent, this points to a serious breakdown in US India relations, with no clarity on whether politics, trade, or strategy is driving it.
Markets reacted swiftly. Indian equities saw their steepest fall in months, led by Reliance Industries. The Sensex and Nifty declined for the fourth straight session as fears grew over US tariffs, trade retaliation, and risks to Indian exports. Midcaps and smallcaps sold off, the rupee weakened despite RBI intervention, and sentiment turned cautious.
The fine print is worrying. A 500 percent tariff on goods and services could hit Indian IT revenues through taxation at source in the US. Ajay Srivastava of the Global Trade Research Initiative says India must clearly convey its position on Russian oil imports to Washington. The contradiction is stark as US lawmakers threaten sanctions even while Washington moves to seize Venezuelan oil assets.
Gold is turning bullish again amid rising geopolitical and economic uncertainty, while India’s inflation may have edged higher in December but remains well below the RBI’s medium term target. On Wall Street, futures slipped as defence stocks rallied on calls for sharply higher US defence spending.
The Oil Action:
Oil prices rose after recent declines as investors assessed Venezuela developments and the proposed US sanctions bill. Brent and WTI edged higher, though global supply remains ample. Reliance Industries said it may consider buying Venezuelan oil if permitted for non US buyers. Analysts continue to expect surplus supply into 2026. On the retail front, Indian Oil is expanding energy hubs. IOC Chairman and Managing Director Arvinder Singh Sahney outlined the company’s retail and value expansion plans.
Reliance Stocks:
Reliance shares have fallen nearly eight percent in four sessions, erasing significant market value. Sushil Choksey, Founder and Managing Director of Indus Equity Advisors, explains how tariff uncertainty, energy exposure, and global risk aversion are weighing on the stock.
Outreach To China:
With US India relations under strain, India may ease restrictions on Chinese firms bidding for govt contracts. The curbs, imposed after the 2020 border clashes, led to project delays and equipment shortages. A rethink could signal a pragmatic reset in India China economic engagement.
As markets react to the 500 percent US tariff threat, questions loom over India US relations, oil trade & investor confidence. From Reliance shares & IT exports to inflation, energy strategy & China outreach, this episode unpacks how geopolitics is reshaping markets across India & Asia. Stay informed as global intent moves capital faster than policy.
