Walter Pelz is a renowned composer, choral director, organist, and educator who earned a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois, a master’s degree in organ and church music from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in theory and composition from the University of Minnesota. The majority of his career was spent at Bethany College (affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) in Lindsborg, Kansas, where he taught music from 1969 until his retirement in 1989. He has composed several hundred compositions, including anthems, solos, cantatas, hymns, choral symphonies, and organ works. The text for this anthem was written by William Hurn in 1813. It contains four stanzas, each of which is treated differently for purposes of this anthem. The first stanza features the voices in harmony with accompaniment, the second features the voices divided between women and men, the third features the voices in harmony without accompaniment, and the fourth features the voices mostly in unison with a soprano descant.

Arise, O God, and shine
In all Thy saving might,
And prosper each design
To spread Thy glorious light;
Let healing streams of mercy flow,
That all the earth Thy truth may know.

Bring distant nations near
To sing Thy glorious praise;
Let every people hear
And learn Thy holy ways.
Reign, mighty God, assert Thy cause,
And govern by Thy righteous laws.

Put forth Thy glorious power,
That Gentiles all may see,
And earth present her store
In converts born to Thee.
God, our own God, His church will bless,
And fill the world with righteousness.

To God, the only wise,
The one immortal King,
Let alleluias rise
From every living thing;
Let all that breathe, on every coast,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
