Greenland protesters gathered to oppose US President Donald Trump's demand to acquire Greenland. US President Trump had threatened to acquire Greenland, citing its importance to the national security apparatus. Donald Trump took to Truth Social, where he claimed the move was critical to Arctic security, citing China's and Russia's growing interest in the region. Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and other European countries unless they agree to sell Greenland to US. Trump announced on Truth Social that he is open to negotiation but warned of tariffs increasing to 10% on February 1, 2026, and 25% on June 1, 2026.
