Please join us for an exit interview in which World Learning CEO and CSIS Senior Adviser Donald Steinberg will host a discussion with Ruth Messinger on her wide-ranging career in domestic and global affairs. Ms. Messinger will reflect on her experience leading a faith based non-governmental organization in an increasingly contentious global environment; highlighting the challenges she faced and overcame during this time. She will also touch on her goals going into her fourth career and how her previous roles have shaped her perspectives so far.

Ms. Messinger has had a distinguished career in the public eye. A teacher, educational administrator and social worker in her early career, Ruth Messinger entered New York City politics at the age of 36. She served on the City Council during the 1980s, and became Manhattan borough president in 1990. In 1997, she ran for mayor, seeking to become the first female mayor in the 330-year history of the office. She defeated Al Sharpton for the Democratic nomination, but lost to incumbent Rudy Giuliani, in the general election. She then became the president of American Jewish World Service (AJWS), the first and only Jewish organization dedicated solely to ending poverty and promoting human rights in the developing world. During her 18-year tenure, AJWS has established itself among the leading international advocates for promoting human rights among disadvantaged people worldwide.
