My 8th grade students explored Medieval art and Gothic architecture by designing and sculpting original gargoyle portraits using Model Magic clay. We studied how gargoyles were used as decorative protectors on cathedrals and castles during the Middle Ages, and students created expressive creatures with dramatic features and emotion.

✅ Steps in the Lesson:
1. Art History Introduction – Study medieval architecture and the purpose of gargoyles
2. Character Design – Students sketch 2–3 gargoyle face concepts with exaggerated features
3. Final Gargoyle Drawing – Detailed portrait layout before sculpting
4. Armature Building – Create simple wire/foil base to support head and neck
5. Clay Sculpting – Use Model Magic to form facial structure, horns, fangs, textures, etc.
6. Attachment & Stability – Join head and body using armature reinforcement
7. Detailing – Add stone texture, cracks, wrinkles, and character
8. Painting – Acrylic paint using stone, aged, or weathered color techniques
9. Finishing Coat – Seal with Mod Podge varnish for protection and dimension
10. Display & Reflection – Label and present sculptures with artist statements
