Written by Bobby Sharp in 1961. At the time Sharp was a drug addict and sold the song to Teddy Powell for 50 bucks and Powell demanded 50/50 song writing credit. Later the courts resolved the issue in favor of Sharp. I have seen many variations of this song and its lyrics.
