STORYLINE:

Seven thousand Indonesians took to the streets of the capital Jakarta on Tuesday demanding constitutional reform.

They were met by police water cannon in front of the country's parliament building.

The demonstrators want an end to military involvment in government and the chance directly to elect their president.

Police faced the crowd from behind fences and barbed wire, but the protesters surged forward, scaling the fence in an attempt to enter the compound.

The demonstrators are demanding sweeping constitutional reforms including the right of voters to elect the president directly.

They also want an end to the military's official role in politics.

38 seats in Indonesia's 700 seat People's Assembly are reserved for military delegates.

There's widespread agreement that the arrangement should end.

The protesters accuse them of dragging their feet over reform of the 1945 constitution.

Many Indonesians believe the country's continued transition from dictatorship to democracy can't be achieved if the armed forces retain their dominant role.

But student protest has proved a powerful weapon in Indonesia and if pressure is maintained on the streets the military appointees could find themselves out of a job sooner than they expect.
