This Feb. 14, 2025, seminar is presented by Nico Franz, Krishtalka Director of KU’s Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, and University of Kansas professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. Symbiota is an open-source software for managing and mobilizing biodiversity data. Over the span of 20 years, Symbiota has developed into a distributed network of more than 60 theme-based research portals incorporating data from more than 1,900 biodiversity collections of preserved plants, animals, fossils and fungi. Symbiota also sustains the National Ecological Observatory Network’s NEON Biorepository data portal (the KU Field Station, which is managed by our research center, is one of 81 NEON sites). The Symbiota platform is well suited to integrate sample- or observations-based ecological research and biodiversity data communities. In this interactive seminar, Nico showcases some of these capabilities and explore possible new synergies with the KU ecological research community. A Q&A follows the talk.
