The events of The Lord of the Rings takes place in the Third Age of Middle-earth. As Thingol's lust for the Silmaril takes place during the First Age, a lot of time had clearly passed. But the betrayal that both species felt against the other ran deep. Legolas and Gimli show extreme prejudice against one another. On the surface, their tolerance and eventual friendship offer the Peter Jackson movies most of their comedic relief. But upon further examination, it's a deep reflection of one of Lord of the Rings' most prominent themes -- brotherhood. The series follows a diverse group comprised of different species such as men, hobbits, elves, dwarves and wizards. They have nothing in common with the exception of their dedication to protecting Frodo and destroying the One Ring. But that shared mission bonds them in a way that nothing else could. It helped them to tear down previously indestructible walls, such as the one between elves and dwarves.
