In this episode of The Thinking Leader Podcast Bryce speaks to Michael Kleeman, a technology strategist whose particular skill is in bridging technical and business issues.

Michael is currently Senior Fellow at the University of California, San Diego, working on critical systems and infrastructures with a focus on creating resilient communities. He is also a Board member at the American Red Cross, the Institute for the Future, and a senior advisor at BSR.

Bryce and Michael discuss dealing with problems in complex systems. The main problem facing the human race is the fact we have built sub-optimal systems and processes that are unsustainable. These systems inherently produce waste products and lose value on a local level. Bryce recalls the time he met the founder of Toyota and how their company had a 100 year plan, positing that planning this far ahead is a necessity.

Michael wants to see CEOs and leaders be incentivized to optimize their businesses for the long term. It is important for leaders to have a reason why they do what they do.
