Here’s a message from BOSF Ambassador Chris Millward (Team4Nature) and his Aunt Linda, following Chris’ incredible 34-mile journey across Birmingham’s parks and open spaces. This walk marked our first #WestMidsAllDayer collaboration, celebrating nature, local birdlife and the amazing volunteers who care for our city’s green spaces!

Along the walk Chris connected with local Friends groups - the “unsung heroes” who dedicate their time and energy to keeping our parks, nature reserves, and waterways thriving. To honour them, he launched the Unsung Heroes Fund, raising money to support BOSF’s work championing these vital volunteer groups.

Chris’ route was deeply personal, inspired by his childhood and walked in memory of his late father, Christopher Millward Snr, whose love for nature shaped Chris from a young age. Almost 50 years later Chris returned to places like Queslett Nature Reserve, meeting the volunteers who now carry on that same legacy of care.

In Chris’ words:
“Heroes never die, because they live on through our thoughts and actions. This was without doubt one of the most inspirational and emotional days of my life. At a time when I’m reflecting and paying tribute to my great father, it was so special to walk and talk to so many people that hold his qualities. The wind of positive change is in your sails.”

This video is a tribute not only to Chris’ father, but to all the people across Birmingham who give freely of their time to protect the open spaces that keep our communities healthy, connected, and inspired.
