A bit of fun - I was wondering what this classic tune would sound like if it was played by a big band with a northern soul-type rhythm section.... A bit like this, I think :-) It sort of reminds me of the kind of music they used for the test card/ceefax in the 60s/70s (not that I was around then (well, I've been around since 1975...)) which, bizarrely enough, I used to tape off the TV when I was a kid by putting a little mic next to the speaker and recording to a cassette... No wonder I am like I am...!


All instruments played by Steve Parry - drums, bass, guitar, piano, organ, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 5 saxophones.


Instrument info:

Drums: Gretsch round badge (1958, I think) with unique wrap (WMP with gold & silver strands)
Bass: Fender Jazz
Guitar: Epiphone Sheraton II
Piano: Blüthner (from around 1870s-ish)
Organ: Roland VK-88
Trumpets: Geneva custom built SP model and Stomvi Master
Trombones: Yamaha Bb/F and Varsity valve trombone
Saxophones: Weltklang alto and Pennsylvania tenor (I don't own a baritone so I cheated by playing the part on alto and pitch-shifting it down an octave...!)


Technical info:

All instruments recorded via Telefunken V672 pre amps into Logic Pro 9 via MOTU 828 mkII soundcards (exceptions are the bass drum and bass (through a Mind Print En-Voice mkII) and the bottom speaker of the Leslie (through a Tubetech MEC1A)) and mixed on a Showix Gold console via a Lawo 3 band EQ and a Tubetech LCA 2B compressor. All horns were recorded through a Coles 4038; drums, a Peluso 2247LE (overhead), an STC 4033 (bass drum) and an RCA 77D (snare); bass was DI'd through a Boss FB-1 pedal; guitar was played through a Fender Twin Reverb mic'd with an RCA 44; piano was mic'd with the Peluso 2247LE; organ was played through a Leslie HL-822 Rotosonic speaker mic'd with 2 SM58s on the top and an AKG D112 on the bottom.
