Almost 2,000 prisoners are set to be released early next month to clear space for those convicted in the recent riots. Those serving sentences of less than five years, will walk free on September 10.

A second wave of up to 1,700 prisoners, serving more than five years, will be released on October 22 after a law change allowing inmates to be freed after serving just 40% of their sentences instead of half.

The move follows the activation of emergency plans in the North of England to prevent prison overcrowding as more rioters face sentencing.

Operation Early Dawn, a contingency plan allowing defendants to be held in police cells until prison space becomes available, was put into action on Monday, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Alex Phillips speaks with Chairman of the Prison Officers Association, Mark Fairhurst.
