While we were in Havana filming lessons with Leo Brouwer, we also took the opportunity to sit down and ask some of the burning questions we as guitarists ourselves had always been dying to know.

Why does Brouwer’s music stick out so distinctly from that of his contemporaries? How does the Maestro hear his music and intend it to be played? What path should young, inspired musicians take to pursue as successful a career as he has achieved?

In the course of talking to him, the Maestro also shares details about his musical upbringing and his life in the United States while studying composition at Juilliard. Later, he talks about returning to Cuba and establishing the film and radio culture of the country during the rise of Fidel Castro.

Enjoy this deep and inspiring conversation with one of the classical guitar’s greatest treasures!

A huge thank you to our friends at Augustine Strings for making this interview possible!
