Trillions of bug-like insects called periodical cicadas are emerging from underground in the US . These cicadas belong to the Brood X have begun to emerge after 17 years. The Brood X, also known as the Great Eastern Brood remain underground for almost their entire lives and only emerge briefly to mate and then die. These bugs emerge in large numbers only when
the ground temperature reaches 64°F (18°C) and they emerge in large numbers because they can ensure that they can outlive predators and live on to mate.
The bugs will be seen in 15 states including Indiana, Georgia, and New York. Currently, they’re coming out en masse in Tennessee and North Carolina. The last such event for the15 states occurred in 2004. The US is the only place in the world where the periodical cicadas stay underground for either 13 or 17 years
