Описание к видео Thick Stock (2025 Stem Remix)

"Thick Stock (1993 Demo)" is owned and made available to purchase by Devin Townsend. Please purchase the song from him.

This is a creative take to remix the song by splitting it into stems, and EQing the parts individually. I am amazed with how high of quality you can get with this, in that you don't have to have the stems to make a song sound better. Ideally one would want to use stems, but if they are not available, this definitely helps either way. I do get the point of remastering, but as I have come to understand, and as other people have mentioned, it has to be from a solid mix to start with. For my own feeling at least, with the two songs I've done so far, I think just mainly some frequency cutting for specific parts of the arrangement seem to help the most. You don't want to cut parts of other instruments which do help the mix feel full. Like say there is too much bass in the guitar track. If you lower the bass on the master bus, then the bass guitar and kick drum lose their strength. This kind of thing is where "remixing" with a stem splitter tool seems to help a lot, as you can adjust these levels independently, then do the remaster on top of those cuts. It's like you are carving out the extra parts after having disassembled it, then built it back together, and smoothed the edges on that new reassembled result. Again, not perfect, as the original mix obscures parts that would have maybe been present had you had stems available, but when you don't, then this is what we have to work with. I am amazed just with how great it seems to make it sound realistic though.

This song was from 1993, and released in 2004 on the Ass-Sorted Demos II compilation album. Credit to T.M. Stevens with the excellent bass playing, and with Devin on vocals, and most likely guitar as well.
