What is the difference between consonant blends and digraphs?

Often, people get confused between digraphs and bends.

In this video, we will understand the difference between the two essential concepts of phonics: digraphs and blends.

Digraphs and blends are both crucial components in understanding how letters come together in words. However, they have distinct characteristics.

A digraph is a combination of two letters that come together to make one sound.

letter 'a' and letter 'i', when they come together instead of saying their individual sounds, together they say a new sound, that ia 'ai' as in 'rain', 'pain'.

Whereas in consonant blends, individual sounds are heard clearly.

like in the word 'tree', 'tr' is a consonant blend and 'ee' is a digraph.

So, in a nutshell, digraphs combine two letters to create a unique sound, like 'ch' or' sh,' while blends involve two or more letters where each maintains its distinct sound, blending smoothly together, such as 'bl' or 'fl.'"
