In this study, the framework of the MFD to calibrate large-scale simulations carried out in SUMO was used. A simulation network was generated for the city of Zurich, Switzerland and successfully calibrate the mesoscopic headways namely tau_ff, tau_fj, tau_jf, and tau_jj as well as the mesoscopic traffic signal penalty with an empirical MFD.
The study shows (i) the adequacy of simulating large-scale networks using SUMO’s mesoscopic model and (ii) how our calibration methodology allows calibrating (or validating) large-scale simulations in a computationally efficient manner.
