COMPOSITION in Art Explained (for Beginners)

Composition! We hear all about it, but what exactly IS composition? Learn how to make better compositions for your artwork with instructor Jessie Chang as she takes us through her creative process in this tutorial followed by a speedpaint.

Composition in art refers to the combination of all elements of art and design within an artwork, creating a cohesive whole. The Foreground, Middle Ground, and Background are essential components of composition. The background consists of elements furthest from the viewer, often aiding the focal point. The middle ground contains elements between the background and foreground, typically where the focal point resides. The foreground includes elements closest to the viewer, framing the composition or focal point.

The Rule of Thirds guides the placement of focal points on a canvas using a three-by-three grid. Intersecting lines on the grid indicate where focal points should ideally be placed, drawing the viewer's eyes to these points first. Focal Points and Emphasis are where the viewer's eyes are drawn first. They can be established using techniques like the rule of thirds, contrast, and emphasis. Contrast and emphasis make certain elements stand out against others, directing attention to them.

More Techniques and Tips: Utilizing leading lines, drawing what is seen rather than perceived, and using references effectively are important techniques for creating compelling compositions. Additionally, framing elements and creating depth contribute to the overall impact of the artwork.
