Unusual Red Wine Blends: Crush On This Episode 37

What is a wine blend? As it sounds, it is when different wine grapes are mixed together. It can be a 50-50 blend of two grapes or there can be multiple grapes each with varying percentages. Some regions in the world are known for single varietal wines, such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Burgundy, Nebbiolo in Barolo and Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero. In other regions, such as in Bordeaux, Rioja, Champagne, Chianti and Southern Rhone, they are known for some of the best wine blends.

The art of blending wine is something that many winemakers do. And sometimes we find unusual wine blends. While Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are a familiar blend, have you ever had Merlot blending with Lemberger? Grenache and Syrah are commonly blended together but add Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Negrette, Tempranillo and more and that is a very unique wine blend. Or there are field blends in which different grape varieties are interplanted in the vineyard.
