Today we look at common tomato problems we encounter when growing tomatoes in September. We look at split fruit and how to ripen more tomatoes on the plant. We explain how to remove leaves to encourage ripening and discourage tomato blight.

We especially look at how to prune tomatoes as they grow in this video as this enables more tomatoes to ripen on the plant and it decreases the tomato blight disease from taking hold. By defoliating or removing leaves we stop the plant from producing more tomatoes and encourage it to ripen what has already grown.

We are getting less blossom end rot in September but instead get more split fruit as the weather will be getting wetter and excessive watering will be more likely for tomatoes grown outside in the vegetable garden. If you are growing tomatoes indoors or in pots then the watering is still under your control. If you water too much then you will get split fruit and if you water too little then you will get more blossom end rot.

Tomato blight is always in the ground and this is the time of year when water will splash it up onto the leaves and stems. We can only lessen this by removing the lower leaves. We will always remove any leaves with blight on them. If the stem get blight then we will need to move all of the fruit and then take the plant out of the ground.
