Because when you examine them closely, when you trace the history of physics from Newton in 1687, to Maxwell with his four electromagnetic equations in 1865, then to Einstein with his two revolutions in 1905 and 1915, you realize something unsettling enough to shatter old beliefs: no physical equation has ever described time as a flow. Not a single line, not a single mathematical symbol, says that time “goes from before to after,” or that the present is “the only real point.” Everything we call “the flow of time” is merely a subjective sensation that the brain narrates in the most convenient way for itself. And I have to admit this: it excites me more than it frightens me.
