🏠 Hostel Overview
IIT Madras is a fully residential institute with 21 hostels, all named after Indian rivers. These include 15 hostels for male students and 6 for female students. Some of the hostels are: 
• Male Hostels: Alakananda, Brahmaputra, Cauvery, Ganga, Godavari, Jamuna, Krishna, Mahanadhi, Mandakini, Narmada, Pampa, Saraswathi, Sindhu, Tamiraparani, and Tapti. 
• Female Hostels: Bhadra, Sabarmati, Sarayu, Sharavathi, Swarnamukhi, and Tunga. 
Notably, hostels like Mandakini, Sindhu, Pampa, Mahanadhi, and Tamiraparani are seven-storeyed buildings, accommodating over 1,200 students each. 
🛏️ Accommodation Details
• First-Year Undergraduates: Typically assigned to shared rooms, often in hostels like Mandakini. 
• Senior Undergraduates: May receive single, double, or triple rooms based on availability and hostel policies. 
• Postgraduate Students: Offered single or shared rooms, depending on their program and hostel assignments.
Each room is furnished with a cot, almirah, study table, chair, and equipped with electrical outlets and a LAN port for high-speed internet access.

• Common Areas: Each hostel features recreational rooms with amenities like TVs, table tennis, pool, and foosball tables. 
• Sports Facilities: Courtyards serve as grounds for football and cricket, with additional basketball and badminton courts available. 
• Utilities: Washing machines are provided in every hostel, ensuring convenient laundry options. 
• Study Resources: Hostels house libraries from which students can borrow books. 
• Connectivity: High-speed internet and LAN facilities are available in every room, with computer rooms accessible in the hostels. 
🎉 Cultural and Social Life
Hostel life at IIT Madras is enriched with cultural celebrations and events:
• Festivals: Students actively celebrate festivals such as Holi, Pongal, Onam, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve within the hostels. 
• Hostel Nights: Each hostel organizes an annual ‘Hostel Night’ featuring food, music, and activities to commemorate graduating seniors and foster community spirit. 
🍽️ Dining Facilities
While individual hostel messes have been phased out since around 2010, dining needs are met through three centralized mess halls: Nilgiri, Vindhya, and Himalaya. Additionally, a new mess catering to Jain food preferences has been opened in the old Cauvery hostel mess.
