Описание к видео “Pillar II” by Andy Akiho • Bridge Percussion

Chicago-based percussion collective, Bridge Percussion, performs “Pillar II” by Andy Akiho.

In Pillar II, Akiho shifts from the dynamic orchestration of Pillar I to a monophonic sound world of just two instruments: crotales and vibraphone. The beginning is sonically amorphous, with a chorus of bowed metals. As players strike with mallets, the texture gradually transforms. Long sustained tones evolve into sharp articulate hits, creating an effect reminiscent of a tape played in reverse. In contrast to Pillar I’s industrial sounds, the precisely-timed bowings, strikes, and muffling of Pillar II create a near-electronic soundscape. Like the focusing of a lens, the piece gradually evolves from bowed ambience to intricate polyrhythmic grooves.

Bridge (noun): a time, place, or means of connection or transition.
What began with Alex Chao’s interest in chamber music rapidly coalesced into a full-fledged production of Andy Akiho’s “Seven Pillars”. A Northwestern University alum, Chao gathered fellow Chicago-based alumni to form this ensemble. Showcasing members of the percussion studio from different graduation years and diverse backgrounds, this group acts as a bridge between past and future cohorts of Northwestern percussionists.

Bridge (verb): make a difference between two groups smaller or less significant.
The production of “Seven Pillars” is equal parts challenging and rewarding. This trailblazing suite for chamber percussion requires command over the individual’s part and subsequent surrender to composite grooves. Through rigorous rehearsal, the ensemble has developed unique coordination skills, mastered complex rhythms, and discovered compelling sounds in the process. Whether currently immersed in the art of percussion or now appreciating it from the periphery, each ensemble member is determined to bridge the gap between casual commitment and professional musicianship.
