I’ll use the words of a great friend of mine from Burmese boxing: We, the Lethwei community from Myanmar and around the world, must improve our clinch techniques. Listen to this, my brothers. Don’t focus only on wild punches and brute force without technique, because many Lethwei fighters are moving to muaythai events, and that will be a loss.
Sometimes I feel very sad, because many coaches, fighters, and even celebrities in the Lethwei community have no idea what clinch really is. They just “hug” or completely ignore the importance of mastering the clinch. This will negatively affect the new generation of fighters, because they will not know what to do when they need to clinch.
The other day, I debated this with a big name in Burmese boxing. I said we must even master the muaythai clinch if we want superiority. But the person laughed at me, and his followers did too. They didn’t want to listen they only wanted to argue for the sake of their egos.
So it’s safe to say that, in terms of clinch, the new generation from the West and the Burmese who have learned Muay Thai clinching are better at clinching than most fighters born in Myanmar today.
For example — Sir Wilmouth Christian and his students they know more clinch techniques than many Myanmar-born fighters.
Sad, brothers.
Even though Burmese boxing is superior with its nine weapons, without clinch knowledge, we are lost.
In this video, I share some actions from a great clinch master, Thut Ti Aung. Watch how he has excellent control in the clinch. He doesn’t just throw wild punches and headbutts. He also uses knees, elbows, and dominates the situation with excellence.

Quero usar as palavras de um grande amigo meu do boxe birmanês para reforçar algo muito importante: nós, da comunidade do Lethwei, tanto em Myanmar quanto no resto do mundo, precisamos evoluir no domínio das técnicas de clinch.
Irmãos, ouçam isso com atenção: não devemos focar apenas em socos selvagens ou força bruta sem técnica. Muitos lutadores de Lethwei estão migrando para eventos de Muay Thai, e, acreditem, isso vai nos fazer falta no futuro.
Sinto tristeza ao ver que muitos treinadores, lutadores e até celebridades da nossa comunidade não têm ideia do que é um clinch verdadeiro. Muitos apenas “abraçam” ou ignoram completamente sua importância. Isso vai afetar negativamente as novas gerações, pois sem um clinch bem trabalhado, elas estarão despreparadas nos momentos cruciais da luta.
Recentemente, tive um debate com um grande nome do Lethwei. Defendi que precisamos dominar até mesmo o clinch do Muay Thai para termos superioridade. Infelizmente, fui ridicularizado por ele e por seu grupo de seguidores. Não quiseram ouvir, só quiseram defender o ego.
Então eu digo: com relação ao clinch, a nova geração do Ocidente e birmaneses que treinaram Muay Thai estão, sim, mais avançados do que muitos lutadores nascidos em Myanmar atualmente. Um exemplo? Sir Christian Wilmouth e seus alunos. Eles demonstram um domínio técnico superior no clinch em comparação com muitos lutadores tradicionais.
É triste, irmãos… Por mais que o boxe birmanês seja riquíssimo com suas nove armas, sem clinch, estamos perdidos.
