I hated learning thumb position growing up. I couldn’t make a good sound and struggled to read treble clef. It was too many things for me all at the same time, trying to learn a new piece in a new clef while trying to learn a new position. It made playing the cello feel totally foreign, and it was very discouraging. Which of course made me not want to practice.. Adding thumb position to scales you already know is such an accessible way to figure out bow placement and left hand position without adding too many other variables. D major is my favorite place to start because your thumb is on the harmonics. Of course I practice 4 octave scales, so the way I add thumb position to those is a little different. More on that later!
