Koechlin's Nouvelles sonatines No. 1, Op. 87 is a refined gem that manages to combine the sleek lean textures of Neoclassicism with bold colouristic modal changes. This pieces uses the concept of the Shepard tone to create an effect of the endlessly rising melody - when the melody rises high enough it restarts on a lower octave to continue the cycle. Of course the modality of the melody and the accompanying harmonies are constantly changed to create a mini kaleidoscope of colours over an otherwise overly static concept. The rhythmic motif that serves as a countermelody and the driving force that pulsates the music eventually gets the spotlight at the very end, culminating in a small stretto that closes the piece.
