This adapter fixes one critical issue with later-model Wii and Wii U consoles. It allows for GameCube controllers to connect directly to a WiiMote and work as if they were official Nintendo "Classic" controllers. This controller even has a ZL button for games that require it and an optional "Turbo" button.

Mario Kart 64 was tested in this video using a GameCube WaveBird connected to the adapter, which in turn was connected to a "Motion Plus" WiiMote, which on a Wii U console.
