Some of you might have noticed a round patch of hair missing on the beard area or in the scalp or anywhere else in the body. So this may be a round or oval patch and suddenly it comes and sometimes the barber tells you that you have a patch of hair missing. This condition is called as alopecia areata. It's a medical condition where the body produces certain reactions which cause suppression of the hair follicles. So suppression of hair follicles prevent hair growth in that particular area. So this is thought to be an autoimmune disease and this is because when we study the cellular structure of the area where hair is lost we find many white blood cells especially the T Lymphocytes steel lymphocytes are a type of white blood cells found in this area. So it is thought that these cells are responsible for causing this hair loss. Most of the time more than 90% of the cases it is reversible if treatment is taken it is reversible. However there are some patterns like ophiotic pattern what we call. So the hair is lost in this area the edges of the scalp and sometimes in the eyebrow areas. So these are very difficult to treat and often respond only. When the patient is on treatment and often relapse once the treatment is stopped.
