We love the AEA KU4 ribbon mic used in this studio recording session for its wonderful full & natural sound. We first intended to use a one mic technique with our AEA R88 ribbon mic, but we decided to go with a 3 mic setup with AEA KU4 as vocal mic & placing the Neumann KM 184 at the 11th or 12th fret position. We placed the Shure SM7B about 18 inches away from the guitar body, pointed down and across the sound hole toward the 12th fret.

Wes Dooley, AEA’s founder always had a love for the RCA 44 because it was the favorite microphone of his first mentor in audio recording, Wally Heider, and his legendary musician friend, Les Paul. When Wes was 18-years-old, Heider taught him how to record an entire band with just one RCA 44 mic.
