However, the code is seen by the customer indirectly. The product is seen by the customer, which is in-turn made out of the code, not the design document.

In that case do we say that the design is not important?

No, design is equally important as the code is resultant of the design and the good design produces good code. It is like “Garbage in, Garbage out”.
