"First of all, let me back up a little, this is a mistake I made with respect to email, entirely my mistake, entirely on me. First of all, let me begin by saying in fact as Secretary of Defence I don't use email very much. I certainly don't use it for classified information and work related email is preserved as is required. But, what I was doing that I shouldn't have been doing until a few months ago, which meant that I was doing it longer than I should have, obviously, is using my i-phone, which has my personal email on it, to send messages to my office staff, administrative messages, not classified, and all of this is preserved as a public record as it should be. But, that, I shouldn't be doing and I have stopped doing that but that was a mistake. And, to get to your question, particularly someone in my position and with the sensitivities about this issue, should have known better. And Lita (AP reporter Lolita Baldor) there were plenty of people during the time that you are taking office and so forth, who explain to you what the rules are about emails. So, this is not like I didn't have the opportunity to understand what the right thing to do is. I didn't do the right thing, this is entirely on me. (Reporter, off camera: When did you stop?) A few months ago and basically what that means is that I was doing it for longer than I should have."

"Secretary Carter himself has spoken to this. And his explanation is that he made a mistake. He owned up to that mistake. He acknowledged that it was his alone. And he acknowledged that he has taken steps both to ensure that the information that was transmitted on his personal e-mail has been properly archived on the government system. He did note that, you know, based on his own knowledge of the emails that no classified information was transmitted there. And I - I know that the Department of Defence has also indicated that they're prepared to cooperate with legitimate, Congressionally oversight into this matter, and Secretary Carter also indicated, finally, that - that he has curtailed his use of any email whatsoever, but certainly will ensure moving forward that emails about his government work is conducted on his government email. Consistent with administration policy."

STORYLINE:
U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter acknowledged on Thursday he sometimes used a personal, unsecured email account to conduct official business after he took office in February, a practice he called "entirely my mistake."
Speaking to reporters during a trip to Iraq, Carter said he did not use his phone for classified information.
The Defence Department said all his messages, which appeared to be largely about meetings and speeches, were backed up for record keeping on the department's email system.
His admission followed a New York Times report revealing that he continued the practice even after Hillary Clinton triggered a wave of criticism in March for using a private email account to conduct government business while she was secretary of state. The FBI and several congressional committees are investigating Clinton.
