Queen Mavia The Untold Story of Struggle in Arab and Christian History #arabian #kingdom #saudiarabia
Welcome to today's story about a historical Arab figure who played a pivotal role in Christian history and the Roman Empire. She is Queen Mavia.

Arabs embraced Christianity at a very early stage, with references to Arab churches appearing in letters sent to Pope Stephen I in the 3rd century AD. During this period, theological disputes were rampant among various doctrinal factions. Arabs played a significant role in the religious debates and dialogues held in ancient cities like Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch, Constantinople, and Rome.

The Arabs exhibited a strong inclination towards spiritual independence, and history records the name of a Christian Arab queen who ruled in the 4th century in southern Syria. Her name was Mavia. She demanded the appointment of an Arab bishop named Moses and waged fierce wars against the Roman Empire to achieve this goal. Mavia lived during the reign of Roman Emperor Valens, who ruled from 364 to 378 AD. The historian Rufinus wrote: "Mavia, queen of the Arab tribes, ignited a fierce war in Palestine and the Arab frontier regions, devastating fortresses, cities, and villages, thereby weakening the Roman forces with continuous fighting."

It is believed that her real name was "Muawiya," with the letter 'Ain' being dropped in some sources. Jacob of Edessa in his history mentioned: "The Arabs raided the land of the Romans...and were ruled by a woman named Muawiya...they made peace." This indicates that a truce was made after battles. It is not improbable that this name was used for a woman in the 4th century.

The historian Sozomen, who lived in the first half of the 6th century, reported that "Mavia, queen of the Arabs...broke the treaty with the Romans, which was later renewed by Bishop Moses who was appointed." After the Romans sent an envoy to seek peace, Mavia agreed, and Moses was appointed.

But Queen Mavia did not stop there; she intervened to protect the Roman Empire when needed. In 378, Emperor Valens was killed by burning in one of his battles with the Goths in the Balkans. Soon after, the Goths besieged Constantinople following their victory at the Battle of Adrianople against the Byzantine army. An Arab contingent sent by Mavia played a crucial role in defending Constantinople. A contemporary historian confirmed that this Arab contingent was decisive in the city's defense.

Russian orientalist Nina Viktorovna concludes her discussion about Mavia with the following statement: "The history of Mavia represents just a part of the series of relationships that connected the Arabs with the empire." The imperial policy was aimed at fostering harmony with Arab tribes, binding them with treaties and agreements, making them allies in the struggle against other barbarian groups.

Mavia was an Arab queen who led her people in defending their right to spiritual and perhaps political independence. She played a decisive role in defending Constantinople and saving it after the emperor lost the battle. She served her nation and faith, and her deeds have etched a glorious chapter in history.
