This episode is the first installment from our trip out west to Colorado and Wyoming. We take the East face direct route up the first flatiron. While the route grade is only 5.6 and the climbing is relatively easy, this route is not for the faint of heart. A lot of locals solo the route, but if you are new to the area it is highly recommended to rope up for your first summit. This is 1000 feet of adventure. Before taking this on, make sure that you are comfortable with major runouts and sketchy gear and the occasional sketchy anchor. The first pitch will test you, but once you are through it things get much easier. From the ground its about 25' to a large bolt and then its another 25' to the second bolt with no other protection available until you are above the second bolt so keep your head together. After the first pitch its cruising time till you get to the upper ridge. For me the ridge was a surprising challenge, perhaps because its a different experience from the typical vertical climbing.
